About Saumur:
Saumur is a relatively small and intimate town with plenty of winding narrow
lanes and an abundance of small shops locally owned with long histories. There
are numerous places to eat and drink, many ideal for sitting outside and watching
life go by. One of the most reputable restaurants « le Pot de Lapin »
is within 50m of us.
The town offers cultural and traditional sites to visit such as, the Saturday
local market, le Cadre Noir, as well as France's Ecole Nationale d'Equitation
which is reputed the world over. The town's XIV century Château is situated
within 600m of our Townhouses, with both Catholic and Anglican churches within
walking distance. There are a wealth of traditional French vineyards many of
which are privately owned. You can also visit the wineries that produce sparkling
wine using traditional methods. Finally, it is worth mentioning that within
Saumur we have the world's largest museum of tanks for those who enjoy military
history.
There is a secure cycle path from the houses leading onto a 110 km cycling
route from Angers to Tours. The path is adjacent to the Townhouses so you can
cycle with confidence along the Loire or in the town of Saumur.
The area of Le Fenêt is well known for its prosperous activities in
craftmenship during the XVII century. This craft involved the making of beads,
medals, rings and other religious artifacts. The area is also remembered through
Jeanne Delanoue, an early orphan who gave her life looking after the poor. Her
house can still be seen next to Notre Dames des Ardilliers.
